Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti has said that it is an honour to be compared to veteran playmaker Andrea Pirlo, although the Juventus midfielder was not his idol when growing up.

Verratti, 22, was a Juventus fan growing up in the coastal town of Pescara, rising through the youth ranks of his local team to earn a big-money move to the Ligue 1 champions in 2012.

“For me it is an honour to be compared to Pirlo, but my idol was [Alessandro] Del Piero,” the midfielder told Il Corriere della Sport.

“At PSG I am a picked regularly as a play-making midfielder but in Italy there is no trust in the young players; while abroad, if they pick you, they expect you to play as well as the more experienced players.”

The Italian also discussed the chances of his boyhood team Juventus, who take on Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final.

“They are a great team and I can say I had the honour of being close to them. I hope they win the Champions League.”
