Palermo coach Giuseppe Iachini admits he was hoping to end his season at the Stadio Renzo Barbera in a different manner, as the Rosanero fell 3-2 to Fiorentina on Sunday afternoon.

A late Marcos Alonso striker gave the Viola all three points, and despite the disappointing result on the day, Iachini believes the Rosanero can look back on their season with much to be proud of.

“We’ve had a good season despite defeat this afternoon,” he stated while speaking to Mediaset Premium.

“We played good football for long parts of the season, trying to increase the value of the club’s assets. It’s a shame though as we wanted to close out our season in front of our fans in a different manner.

“[Paulo] Dybala? I wanted to take him off to give him a standing ovation but we had to make some tactical changes. I kept him on the field because he can score a goal at any moment.”

The 51-year-old then went on to praise the young Argentine, who is set to join Juventus at the end of the season, labelling him as the best player he has ever coached.

“I’ve seen him grow, we had a great time together. He found his position as a first striker, playing as a second striker he was too far away from goal.

“This change in position was key for him. My staff and I are happy to have helped him grow. No doubts he is the best player I have coached.

“My future? I have a contract here, [Maurizio] Zamparini has even spoken of an extension. We will talk about it moving forward.”
