Walter ZengaInter goalkeeping legend Walter Zenga has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Sinisa Mihajlovic as Sampdoria coach, should he vacate his position after the current season ends.

Serbian tactician Mihajlovic has been heavily linked to the precarious Napoli job, of which Rafael Benitez is incumbent, and reports have suggested that Sampdoria have already begun their search for a replacement.

According to Rai Sport, 55-year-old Zenga has been earmarked for talks should a vacancy appear, with the former Palermo supremo reportedly very interested in taking the reins.

Zenga has earned the reputation of being a managerial journeyman, having coached a total of 13 separate sides since he began his coaching adventure in 1998.

The movement of personnel could happen sooner rather than later with Benitez reportedly on the brink of an exit in Naples, after the Partenopei’s Champions League qualification challenge collapsed against Juventus on Friday night.

Zenga has most recently donated his coaching skills to a trio of clubs in the Middle East, after leaving his last Italian post at Palermo in 2010.
