questioning in court.

The 53-year-old was one of seven men arrested by police on June 23 accused of committing sporting fraud in order to ensure that the Sicilian side avoided consecutive automatic relegations.

“I bought five games,” is the headline in Tuesday’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport that makes reference to the admission made yesterday by the now former president of the club.

While a club statement released on Monday confirms that the Elefanti patron admits to being in touch with other parties to try and affect games, it insists they failed to influence them.

Catania finished 15th in the 2014-15 Serie B campaign, two points above the relegation play-off places.

The club’s survival was helped by a run of five wins between March 29 and April 24 and investigators allege at least four of those wins were fixed, along with a draw on May 2.

Pulvirenti had previously protested his innocence in the ‘Goal Trains’ scandal, but admitted to paying €100,000 in bribes for each of the matches in question.
