Fiorentina have identified Basel coach Paulo Sousa as a replacement if Vincenzo Montella leaves the club in the coming weeks.

The 44-year-old former Portuguese international actually spent time in the Serie A as a player, with Inter and Juventus in the 90’s, and is said to be keen on a return to the peninsula.

Sky Sport Italia report that Fiorentina have turned their attention to Basel boss Paulo Sousa, who is close to securing a domestic double in his first season at the helm.

Montella is still uncertain whether he’ll remain as Viola boss for next season, as he weighs up a rumored offer from AC Milan.

Sampdoria were also reported to be keen on Sousa’s services weeks ago, but their interest seems to have cooled down as they close in on Walter Zenga as their new boss.

Sousa has had spells with Swansea City, Leicester City, Videoton and Maccabi Tel Aviv before taking the reins of the Swiss champions this past summer.
