Lazio have reacted angrily to the suggestion that they could be kicked out of the Champions League over alleged match-fixing.

Federbet general secretary Francesco Baranca has warned that the Aquile may face exclusion from European competition should an investigation into illegal betting on games be stepped up.

“The views of Mr Baranca on the consequences that could be if interest to Lazio, are purely subjective, and without any supporting evidence, and are a complete personal manifestation without any elements that could contradict the investigations carried out in previous years and ended with rulings from the sporting justice system,” a statement on the club’s official website read.

“Lazio have finished the season successfully and are preparing for another in Europe.

“Statements like Mr Baranca’s are only a nuisance that are disturbing the peaceful atmosphere of our club, the players and the fans, and only seek to amplify those who collect this information, to make them seem like sources of truth and are a real danger, but they become an accomplice to activity which is merely defamatory, supported only by hatred and the desire to harm Lazio, far removed from the exercise of the freedom of the press and the proper conduct in the duty of information.”
