Native son Lorenzo Insigne shared a touching moment with the San Paolo faithful after Sunday’s crushing 4-2 loss to Lazio which knocked Napoli out of next year’s Champions League.
Despite a miserable and often turbulent campaign, Napoli could have sealed third place with a victory in the season’s finale but fell apart after rallying from a 2-0 deficit to equalize. The match turned when Gonzalo Higuain skied his spot kick which would given Napoli the edge heading into the last 15 minutes.
The Corriere del Mezzogiorno reported Insigne stayed on the pitch after the crushing loss and when his team mates began entering the locker room, Insigne made his way over to the Curva to share in the sorrow of the Napoli faithful and ask forgiveness for a season which ended in tears.
Insigne was then quickly followed by Jose Callejon, Dries Mertens and Walter Gargano who joined the 23-year old Italian international in a touching display of the heartbreak of football.
