Cristiano-Ronaldo-PortugalPortugal are set to be hit in the pocket after Cristiano Ronaldo failed to feature in their recent friendly win against Italy in Switzerland.

An Eder goal at the Stade de Geneve condemned the Azzurri to a 1-0 loss that now means they will not be among the top seeds for World Cup 2018 qualification – a game that Ronaldo missed through a “muscular problem”, according to coach Fernando Santos.

According to Sport Mediaset, the organisers had agreed to pay €380,000 to the Portuguese football federation if the Real Madrid star had played – but would only pay out on the money if Ronaldo took to the field.

As a result, they are now set to lose out on the money because a contract was signed specifically stating that the former Manchester United attacker had to be present.

Despite the coach’s claims that Ronaldo was suffering with an injury, he was already on holiday at the time of the game.
