Real Madrid are reportedly considering a surprise move for Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci.

The Spanish giants have so far expressed a desire to strengthen other areas of their squad but have now changed their transfer strategy in a bid to obtain a top-class defender.

Spanish newspaper AS have reported that Los Blancos will aim to sell Frenchman Raphael Varane in a bid to raise funds for the Italian international, despite the player apparently agreeing a new deal with Juventus.

It is stated that they hope to sell Varane to English Premier League side Manchester United for an estimated fee of €40 million and in return will use €30 million to make a bid for Bonucci.

The 28-year-old was signed by Juventus from Bari in July 2010 for a total of €15.5 million and has since became an integral member of the squad, this season becoming the Bianconeri’s joint most played player with 52 appearances.
