Roma have acknowledged defeat in their aim to sign Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to strengthen ahead of an assault on the Scudetto next season.

The Giallorossi have been linked with a new goalkeeper for the past few months, despite Morgan De Sanctis penning a new one year contract, with Begovic and Arsenal-bound Petr Cech their biggest targets.

But TMW are now reporting that despite initially being confident they would be able to pull off a deal for the Bosnia and Herzegovina international, there will be no move now due to ‘personal reasons’ on the part of the player.

He now seems set to stay with the Potters who he helped to a ninth placed-finish last season.
