Sampdoria could lose their place in next season’s Europa League as UEFA have placed the club under investigation due to a 2012 betting scandal that saw the Blucerchiati deducted a point and one of their players banned for three years.

Europe’s governing body are set to contact the FIGC in order to receive secondary verification over the three year ban handed to former player Stefano Guberti due to match fixing.

As Guberti was a Sampdoria player at the time the Blucerchiati accepted a one point penalty that has handed to them, but as a result of UEFA’s investigation they will need to submit new documents to fight for their right to remain in the Europa League.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Sampdoria would be willing to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne to defend their right to play, but could prolong the case further than the preliminary match set for July 30.

With a potential removal of Sampdoria hanging in the balance, Inter would be next line to take part in the competition with Genoa having already been ruled out after failing to receive a UEFA licence.
