Sampdoria have begun their search for a new striker and have identified Roma’s Mattia Destro as the man to lead their line next season.

Destro started the season at Roma but after failing to cement a regular spot in the first team, he spent the latter half of the campaign on loan at AC Milan.

With the Rossoneri failing to exercise their €16 million option to land the striker, Il Tempo reports that the Blucerchiati are ready to swoop in and land the Italian international.

Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has contacted Roma about the possibility of signing Destro on loan, with the option of making the move permanent at the end of the season.

The Italian international joined Roma from Sampdoria’s bitter city rivals Genoa in 2012 and despite a prolific end to the 2013/14 campaign in which he hit an impressive 13 goals in just 20 games, Destro failed to force his way into Roma coach Rudi Garcia’s plans.
