Romagnoli - RomaSerie A side AC Milan are keeping close tabs on Roma’s Italian U21 international centre back Alessio Romagnoli, as a deal to extend the contract of veteran defender Philippe Mexes hits a stumbling block.

The 20-year-old had a scintillating season on loan with Sampdoria last season and has forged a great partnership with Empoli’s Daniele Rugani at the heart of the Azzurrini defence.

Sky Sport Italia has reported that the Rossoneri are having difficulties coming to a mutually beneficial arrangement with Mexes and that should they fail to reach a compromise over his new deal, they will turn their attentions to Romagnoli and allow the 33-year-old former Auxerre man to leave the club.

Mexes, who arrived in Milan from Roma back in 2011, has made 81 league appearances for the Stadio Meazza side and is famed for his somewhat fiery temperament.
