Sampdoria have officially announced the signing of free agent Mattia Casssani, after the defender left Parma.

The 31-year-old had spent the last two seasons at the Gialloblu, making just 18 Serie A appearances in 2014/15 for the stricken Ducali, and now returns to the Blucerchiati where he spent a short loan spell in 2003 before joining Hellas Verona.

Sampdoria announced the signing on their website and the experienced defender will offer an alternative to first-choice right-back Lorenzo De Silvestri with Walter Zenga’s side competing in the Europa League in the upcoming campaign for the first time since 2009.

Former Juventus youngster Cassani found prominence during a five year spell with Palermo before a 2011 move to Fiorentina, during which time he made 11 appearances for the Italian national side and was included in the provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
