Lazio vs MilanLazio skipper Stefano Mauri is hoping to extend his stay in the capital for at least one further year, despite earlier reports suggesting the player was on his way out of the club.

The 35-year-old’s contract has already expired and a renewal was supposedly unlikely as Stefano Pioli starts a rejuvenation process of his squad, which will play Champions League football next season.

“Stefano will be meeting president Claudio Lotito this week,” his legal representative, Matteo Melandri, told Sky Sport Italia. “They’ll make a decision about his future but from what I understand he will continue to be the captain of Lazio.

“I have no idea what length the new contract might be, but I am certain he will still be with the side next season.”

Mauri has been with the Biancocelesti since 2006 and has made over 240 league appearances.  He has also featured 11 times for the Italian national side.
