Cristian Ledesma has bid an emotional farewell to fans and colleagues alike as his nine year spell at Lazio comes to an end.

The Argentine-born midfielder made 318 appearances for the Aquile and won the Coppa Italia in 2009 and 2013.

Speaking at a specially arranged press conference the 32-year-old said: “I don’t want to believe that it’s over.

“What’s most important are the nine intense years I experienced here – and spending them in Rome is worth twice as much as anywhere else.

“My fondest memory will be the admiration of the fans. It means more than scoring in the derby or winning the Coppa Italia.

Ledesma also discussed his reasons for leaving the Biancocelesti.

“I couldn’t face another season like the last. I want to play regularly.

“[President Claudio Lotito] explained that the club is going in a more youthful direction and wants to lower the payroll.

“But perhaps I could return one day.”

Regarding his future, the one-time Italian international all but ruled out playing for another Italian club.

“It’s very hard to imagine myself in another Italian city wearing another club’s shirt.

“I feel that my children would benefit from experiencing life in another country.”

Premier League sides Arsenal and Watford have been linked with the central-midfielder.
