Hamsik - Napoli v WolfsburgManchester City are preparing a €28 million bid to lure captain Marek Hamsik away from Napoli to last year’s Premier League runners-up squad.

The Slovakian international has become an iconic fixture with the Partenopei in his eight years under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius but found himself somewhat marginalised in last year’s bitter campaign which ended with the Azzurri out of the Champions League and with coach Rafa Benitez seeking greener pastures at Real Madrid.

On Tuesday The Sun reported Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini is targeting Hamsik to bolster the squad, particularly if their audacious bid for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba falls through.

The 28-year old Hamsik has established roots in the southern Italian city and is beloved by its passionate fans but despite ‘Marekiaro’ ranking third in all-time club appearances (303) and seventh in goals scored (77), there may be no better time than the present for the symbol of Napoli’s rebirth from the ashes of Serie C1 to make his mark in another league.
