The Italian football federation (FIGC) have begun their questioning of Catania’s owner Antonio Pulvirenti over claims he fixed matches.

The airline entrepreneur, who has owned the Rossoazzurri since 2005, admitted in last month’s preliminary hearing to paying €500,000 to fix Serie B matches during the back of last season, during which Catania comfortably avoided relegation.

Pulvirenti’s objective during the trial is likely to be a case of downplaying the importance of the fixtures, according to ANSA.

The fear for Catania is a guilty verdict that would incorporate a punishment of relegation to Serie D, a competition the team won in 1994/95 after being dissolved to due financial irregularities following years of decline.

The owner of Catania, Pulvirenti resigned as club president when the allegations emerged of his wrongdoing.
