Sampdoria have completed the signing of Palermo captain Edgar Barreto on a free transfer, the club announced on their official Facebook page.

The 30-year-old Paraguayan international has been a key member of the Rosanero outfit since joining from Atalanta in 2011, but was unable to reach an agreement with the club to extend his stay.

Sampdoria had actually agreed a deal with the player earlier in the year, which resulted in Barreto being stripped of the captaincy by Palermo, but have only made it official now.

“Now we can say: Edgar Osvaldo Barreto is officially a Sampdoria player,” a statement read on Sampdoria’s official Facebook page.

“Born in Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay, on July 15 1984, the midfielder will meet with the media at the Temu sports centre at the end of the first morning training session.”

Barreto netted seven goals in 122 appearances for Palermo during his career.
