Sevilla striker Carlos Bacca was set to sign a new deal with the Spanish side until AC Milan came calling, according to the player’s agent.

The Rossoneri met the release clause in the Colombian’s contract after missing out on Porto forward Jackson Martinez and Bacca is now set to join Milan in a deal worth €30 million.

However it was not always a foregone conclusion that the 28-year-old would leave the Europa League winners for the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, where there will be no European football in 2015/16, according to agent Sergio Barila in an interview with El Partido de las 12.

“The first contact took place a few weeks ago and Carlos’ first desire was to stay, but when Milan’s offer came in it was an important moment.

“Sevilla offered him a better contract to stay but things had changed and while Sevilla made a great effort [to keep Bacca]; the intention was to go to Milan.”

Having signed from Club Brugge in 2013 the Colombian international has led the line for Unai Emery’s side with great effectiveness, but the future of the club was highlighted by president Jose Castro when discussing the deal with reporters: “They are willing to pay the clause and we have to do what is best for the club, given that we would not sell under the €30m release price.”
