Basel have announced the signing of Pescara captain Birkir Bjarnason on a three-year deal, beating out Torino in the process.

The 27-year-old Icelandic international enjoyed a superb season in the Serie B, as his side narrowly missed out on promotion, netting 12 goals in 38 appearances.

Torino had reached an agreement with Pescara earlier this month, but the move fell through, and Basel swooped in to steal his signature despite reported late interest from Palermo and Benfica.

Basel announced on their official Twitter account on Thursday night that they had signed Bjarnason for an undisclosed fee, and handed him a three-year contract.

Pescara signed Bjarnason from Sampdoria last summer, after being previously co-owned by both sides and quickly re-established himself as an important cog for the team.
