New Sampdoria coach Walter Zenga has apologised to his club’s fans after the Blucerchiati were humbled 4-0 by FK Vojvodina in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifier on Thursday evening.

Sampdoria conceded early in the game before a second half collapse left them stunned on their new coach’s debut and in need of a miracle if they are to reach the group stages of the competition.

“We took a bashing that will do us good,” Zenga told the media following the full time whistle.

“We will reflect on what has happened. I think the first ten minutes of each half completely changed the outcome of the match.

“We had four or five chances to equalise [in the first half], but when we came back on the field [after half time], instead of having patience we lost the second and the third goal on the break. Then the situation became severe.

“When you lose a game so badly you always want to play again. We want to go to Novi Sad and try our hardest. You still have to play to ensure that such losses are absorbed.”

“When your team wins you are to going to celebrate and when you lose you have to apologise to the fans and the coach, to my way of thinking, has to stand in front of the players. If we had won I would not have had to.

“There is no excuse. A team that loses 4-0 only has to analyze why it conceded three goals in the first ten minutes of each half.”

Zenga is a new appointment at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris having replaced Sinisa Mihajlovic in June.
