English Premier League club Watford are reportedly closing in on a surprise move for Roma striker Seydou Doumbia.

After acquiring left-back Jose Holebas from the Giallorossi already in recent days, the newly-promoted Hornets could again look to Rome to significantly strengthen their starting line-up.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Watford have already established talks with last season’s Serie A runners-up, with negotiations progressing well.

Roma are believed to have put forward a season-long loan move with a mandatory purchase next year to the interested party, but Watford are ready to gamble on bringing the Ivory Coast international to Vicarage Road on an immediate permanent basis.

Quique Flores’ side have been linked with a host of Serie A stars this summer, including Napoli duo Dries Mertens and Gokhan Inler.

27-year-old Doumbia hit 61 goals from 95 league appearances for previous side CSKA Moscow, but has been less efficient since his move to Rudi Garcia’s men in January of this year, with a rate of two goals from 13 Serie A matches.
