Zinedine Zidane's headbuttNine years on from Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt on Marco Materazzi during the 2006 World Cup final, the Frenchman has reacted angrily when asked to discuss the incident.

With the scores 1-1 in the 110th minute of the final, playing his final match before retirement, Zidane headbutted the Italian defender off the ball and was sent off; the Azzurri would win the match on penalties.

The former Ballon d’Or winner reacted angrily when questioned about the incident for Rai 1’s ‘Duellanti’ programme. Host Massimo Giletti told Gazzetta dello Sport: “He accepted our interview but reacted very angrily to the Materazzi question so that will not be broadcast.”

“The aim of the programme was to put an end to the historical arguments that we have all read about,” said Giletti. “But we have had to cut that part of the interview.”

What exactly occurred in the offending section of the interview will remain unknown for now, but football fans across the globe remain interested in one of the game’s most dramatic moments – believed to have occurred after Materazzi insulted the former Juventus player’s sister.
