De Jong - AC MilanAC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong believes victory over Empoli is essential for his club’s chances of a successful Serie A campaign.

The Dutch international featured in Sinisa Mihajlovic’s starting line-up last week, as the Rossoneri got the new league campaign underway with a demoralising 2-0 defeat away to Fiorentina, but hopes for a much better outcome on Saturday evening.

“We have worked well during the week,” de Jong told reporters during a pre-match press conference.

“We have to win at home against Empoli. We’re hungry, and want the three points.”

The former Manchester City star was asked what the Rossoneri are looking to do differently in order to get the right result.

“We want to apply more pressure, as we did for example against Perugia [in the Coppa Italia third round].”

“We need to make sure that we do it in all matches against every opponent.”

De Jong also expressed his ambition to ensure AC Milan make a significant impact upon the Serie A standings this term, following last season’s disappointing 10th place finish.

“We hope to finish in the top three.”

“We try not to think too far ahead, we just take one game at a time.

“We have so many experienced players, there are many leaders such as [Riccardo] Montolivo and [Christian] Abbiati.

“I also try to take responsibility when I’m on the field.”
