Former Empoli coach Silvio Baldini has said that new Azzurri coach Marco Giampaolo is the right man to replace Maurizio Sarri.

The 56-year-old who coached Empoli twice in the 1990s and 2000s, praised Sarri’s ability to guide the Tuscans to Serie A survival last season and believes that Giampaolo is capable of doing the same by implementing his football philosophy.

“Last season Empoli achieved something extraordinary,” Baldini said to Tuttoempoli.com.

“Mr Sarri, the directors and all the players surpassed expectations, completing a championship at a high level; it will not be easy to repeat.

He continued: “I know Giampaolo well. He is a great worker, meticulous, [and] a football man who succeeds in giving the squad a clear idea of the football he wants.

“I am sure that he will do well, following in the footsteps of Sarri in the last few years.”

Baldini was also asked about playmaker Mirko Valdifiori and the former Azzurri coach believes that Empoli are capable of finding someone good enough to replace the Napoli midfielder.

“He will not be easy to replace,” Baldini said. “He had a great season, earning a move to Napoli.”

“At Empoli however, they were always good at discovering new talents and I am sure that also this time, they will not make a mistake.”
