Bayern Munich dominated AC Milan, claiming a 3-0 victory in the Audi Cup at the Allianz Arena, sending the Italians to the third-place play-off.

An unfortunate deflection from Cristian Zapata sent a Juan Bernat goal into the back of the net midway through the first half to open the scoring before Mario Gotze doubled their lead in the second half and Robert Lewandwoski made it 3-0, five minutes from the end.

The first real chance of the game fell to Bayern Munich on seven minutes when Keisuke Honda committed a foul on the edge of the box and the following free-kick was hit just over the bar by Douglas Costa.

The Germans continued to dominate possession and got the breakthrough they deserved just over 15 minutes later thanks to an unfortunate deflection off Cristian Zapata guiding Juan Bernat’s effort towards goal and away from Diego Lopez’s diving body.

The hosts nearly got a second soon afterwards when a falling Pierre Hojbjerg chested the ball against the post from a cross.

Bayern kept threatening the Milan penalty area and got very close to doubling their lead when new singing Arturo Vidal headed a Rafinha cross onto the crossbar, but beaten Lopez could breathe yet another sigh of relief as the half-time whistle blew.

Bayern eventually doubled their lead when Lewandowski’s poor touch fell to Mario Gotze in the penalty area, who placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Lewandwoski then made things worse for Milan as he powered a magnificent volley into the top corner of the net.

The match ended 3-0 to the German champions, giving them a place in the Audi Cup final, while the Rossoneri are handed their third pre-season loss.
