Empoli 3-1 at the Stadio Carlo Castellani on Sunday evening in Serie A.

The hosts took the lead through Riccardo Saponara after just seven minutes but three goals in 10 minutes early in the second half from Riccardo Meggiorini, Valter Birsa and Aberto Paloschi turned the game around.

Chievo started brightly with Paloschi firing narrowly wide after going through on goal.

Riccardo Saponara opened the scoring after seven minutes with a smart first-time strike into the bottom left corner.

Empoli then dominated possession and controlled the game with Manuel Pucciarelli forcing a good save from Albano Bizzarri while Massimo Maccarone drove forwards and hit the bar soon after.

Maccarone had a glorious chance to double Empoli’s lead after 37 minutes but missed the target from inside the six yard box.

Luca Martinelli almost nabbed a second just before the break with a a header from a corner but Bizzarri made a spectacular save to send the sides into the break with Empoli a goal up.

Chievo looked more confident in possession although Maccarone had a penalty shout rejected straight after the restart when he was brought down by Alessandro Gamberini.

Substitute Riccardo Meggiorini equalised for Chievo in the 55th minute with a glancing header at the near post from a corner.

Chievo took the lead in the 59th minute through Birsa after a driving run forwards culminated with the Slovenian cutting onto his left and bending the ball into the bottom corner.

The Flying Donkeys comeback continued in the 62nd minute as Alberto Paloschi converted a free header after getting onto the end of a precise Meggiorini cross.

Empoli naturally pushed forwards in order to save a result but Chievo were happy to concede possession and get bodies behind the ball as the visitors saw out time.
