fiorentina MilanFiorentina are confident that they will go far in the Europa League following the draw for the group phase of the competition.

La Viola will face Swiss champions Basel – the former club of new coach Paulo Sousa – as well as Lech Poznan of Poland and Portugal’s Belenenses.

“When looking at the draw, it certainly could have been worse,” said director general Andrea Rogg to Sky Sport Italia when offering his thoughts on the draw.

“But as always, we will keep our feet on the ground.

“Our aim is to go as far in the tournament as possible because the city and the fans deserve it.”

The director was also asked about the significance of Sousa’s return to Basel.

“He knows the pitfalls of that match and he’ll be happy to return to a place where he achieved so much,” Rogg went on.

“Sousa is a direct and meticulous person and he has already won the respect of the players and the supporters.

“He has a great ability to communicate with the players so the team are eager to follow his instructions.”

The director then addressed rumours that the Gigliati attempted to sign AC Milan’s Phillipe Mexes.

“He is not our player but he is one of two or three options that we are considering for our defence,” said Rogg.

Fiorentina will begin their Europa League campaign at home to Basel on 17 September.
