The German’s departure means that new coach Paulo Sousa in now in desperate need of bolstering his striking options, considering that he only has Giuseppe Rossi and Khouma Babacar to choose from.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Viola are looking for an attacking player with different characteristics to those of Mario Gomez and it is for this reason that Borini is favoured over other players such as Mattia Destro and Marco Borriello.

Borini played in Serie A once before during the 2011-12 season for Roma, featuring in 24 games and scoring a respectable nine goals.

The Italian could be the Viola’s third signing of the summer as they also make plans for mounting another strong challenge in both Serie A and the Europa League.
