Luca Antonini has signed for Serie B’s Livorno from Genoa in a move that sees him move down a league by choice.

The Amaranto are coached by ex-Italy international Christian Panucci and have plans to return to Italy’s top tier after they were relegated at the end of the 2013-14 season.

According to Calciomercato.it, the Livorno coach had a big part to play in bringing the ex-AC Milan full-back to the Tuscan side.

Genoa could sell another defender before the transfer deadline as they are waiting for an offer from Napoli for their central defender Sebastian De Maio.

The 33-year-old Antonini spent the most successful period of his career at Milan where he remained for five seasons, making 81 Serie A appearances and 17 in European competitions.

However, despite featuring regularly at the back for the Serie A giants, he never managed to receive a call up to the Italian national side and his playing time with the Grifone was limited by injury before his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
