Inter defender Nemanja Vidic is set to undergo back surgery meaning he will miss a significant portion of the 2015-16 season.

The former Manchester United centre-back has been plagued by back problems in recent months but the Nerazzuri’s medical team had hoped that a course of treatment would stave off the need for surgery.

La Gazzetta dello Sport have confirmed, however, the Serbian will go under the knife in the next few days and is likely to be out of action for three or fourth months.

The 33-year-old has struggled to replicate the fine form he displayed at Old Trafford since joining Inter in 2014, and has been linked with an exit from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Inter are rumoured to be keen to offload the rugged defender following the acquisition of Joao Miranda from Atletico Madrid, but any potential deal will now be shelved until Vidic recovers.
