Juventus have turned their attention to former Hamburg defender Heiko Westermann as the club search for defensive cover before the start of the new season.

The 31-year-old German international joined Hamburg from Schalke in 2010 for a fee in the region of €7.5 million and is currently a free agent after deciding not to renew his deal with the club at the end of last season.

According to German newspaper Die Welt, the Bianconeri have identified the towering defender as the man to solve their pre-season defensive frailties, with coach Massimiliano Allegri a long-term admirer of the former Arminia Bielefeld player.

Westermann made 143 appearances during a five year spell with Hamburg, scoring nine goals.

The Bianconeri face Lazio on Wednesday in the Supercoppa Italiana in China.
