Juventus are set to step up their pursuit of Zenit Saint Petersburg’s midfielder Axel Witsel.

New signing Sami Khedira suffered a hamstring injury during the Bianconeri’s 2-0 friendly defeat against Marseille on Saturday night, adding to a midfield problem caused by the losses of Andrea Pirlo and Arturo Vidal, and the Serie A champions have now targeted the 26-year-old Belgian to boost their midfield options.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the Bianconeri are set to fight it out with AC Milan for the former Benfica midfielder.

With the Belgium international’s contract due to expire in 2017, the Russian league champions are looking for a fee of around €30 million, while the Old Lady are set to offer €20m plus bonuses.

The Diavolo were reported to have agreed personal terms with the 26-year-old at the start of July but failed to agree a deal with the Zenitchiki over the transfer fee, but could now re-enter negotiations and battle their fierce rivals from Turin for the talented playmaker.
