Lazio coach Stefano Pioli has said he feels that his side were wasteful in the final third during their Champions League qualifier against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Aquile are in a strong position going into the second leg following a 1-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico after Balde Keita Diao scored the only goal of the match with thirteen minutes remaining.

“It was difficult throughout the game, because the opponent is complicated. We’re back to being a team that fights, who wants to stay in the match,” Pioli told Premium Sports.

“We had some good opportunities, perhaps one goal is not enough but it was a good game.

“The clean sheet means it is a good result, it’s good not to concede goals at home but qualification is still far from being achieved.

“We have proven to be a good side and could go to Leverkusen with the knowledge that we can play to the end. We knew it would be complicated.

“The opponent is tough but the boys got a good result.”

The Italian was also pleased with his teams response to the defeat to Juventus in the Supercoppa Italia.

“We lost the Supercoppa which we wanted to win, we suffered that night, but we are aware that it will be difficult to get through to the group stage but we are satisfied with tonight’s result.”
