Former Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo has revealed he could have joined English Premier league side Chelsea in 2009, alongside former AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The 36-year-old is settling into life in New York rather well after his move away from Turin, and has had plenty of time to reflect on the past, allowing the Italian to bring up a rather surprising revelation which could have seen his career take a different path.

“When Carlo Ancelotti was at Chelsea he asked me to join him in London,” he said while speaking to Shortlist.com.

“I was certainly interested as Carlo was like a father to me, and the two clubs started talking about it.

“A deal was almost completed, but then Milan demanded a player in exchange and it all fell through.”

Meanwhile, another Italian player who has made the move to England, Mario Balotelli, has not quite shared the glories of his compatriot in recent years, though Pirlo tips the struggling striker to return to his former ways.

“Mario is one of the most talented and funny guys that I know, you just can’t get bored with him around.

“I used to walk into training in Italy and even before he said something I could just look at his face and I would start laughing.

“I hope next season goes well for him, because I still believe he has all the attributes to be one of the best forwards in Europe.”

Concluding, the midfield maestro chose to look upon his own future.

“I’m loving it here in New York, it’s exciting and it’s one of the most iconic cities in the world.”
