Sampdoria have turned their attention to Dimitar Berbatov as the club continue their search for a proven goalscorer ahead of the new season.

The 34-year-old Bulgarian striker is currently a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Ligue 1 club Monaco in June.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the Blucerchiati have decided against pursuing Liverpool forward Mario Balotelli in favour of trying to secure a deal for the former Manchester United player.

Berbatov is best known for his successful four year spell with Manchester United, where he scored 48 goals during 108 appearances for the club, winning two Premier League titles.

The seven time Bulgarian Footballer of the Year has also represented Bayer Leverkusen, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham during a career which has yielded over 200 goals.
