Cristian Zapata AC MilanAC Milan defender Cristian Zapata has said that the team must respond to their opening day defeat to Fiorentina.

Sinisa Mihajlovic endured a disappointing start to his career as Milan coach with a 2-0 defeat to the Viola after 21-year-old defender Rodrigo Ely was sent off.

“It was not a good game, we misplaced so many passes” said Zapata to Milan’s TV channel.

“I think in the first half hour the team had started well, we just weren’t passing the ball fast enough.

“Then the sending off complicated everything, on Saturday we have to win by force [against Empoli].”

The Colombian was then asked about the effect Mihajlovic has had on the squad so far.

“We are working with great intensity,” Zapata continued.

“He [Mihajlovic] came in and changed the mentality of the players.

“We work every day at our best, and the results will come.”

Zapata then touched on his time with the Rossoneri and his hopes for the future with Milan.

“It’s the fourth year that I’ve been here,” added Zapata.

“The first one was definitely a good year in which we were in the Champions League.

“The other two years have not gone well and we have been in trouble.

“We hope to return to the top levels, we are working hard and we hope to achieve that. ”

Finally, the 28-year-old touched on Mario Balotelli’s return to the club.

“I think he is serious and is definitely here to make up for the year in Liverpool,” said Zapata.

“He has to get right into the game and certainly in these first two days he has been doing that, we hope that he will continue like this.”
