AC Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has reiterated that both Riccardo Montolivo and Nigel De Jong have important roles to play this season.

Italy international Montolivo was handed a starting role for last weekend’s Derby della Madonnina defeat against Inter, with De Jong settling for a place on the substitutes bench.

The duo remain in a battle against each other to earn a place in the current starting eleven, with only one getting the nod on matchday due to their similar roles.

“They are two very important players for Milan,” Mihajlovic told reporters ahead of Saturday’s clash with Palermo.

“We will serve both, although each player has different characteristics. I have to make my choice of which player will play this week, the next week, the other might play.

“I have to make choices, right or wrong, knowing that they are two very important players. If one plays the other is not burned.”

I’d play both of them. NDJ is a ball winner, whilst Monty is a player that links everything together. To compliment the pair of them, you need another central midfielder. One that is capable of breaking forward to support the forward(s), and also pressing the opponents deep lying midfielder.
