Atalanta BC v UC Sampdoria - Serie AAtalanta won 2-1 against Sampdoria at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia on Monday night and jump ahead of their opponents in the Serie A table.

La Dea took an early lead thanks to a Niklas Moisander own goal and sealed the win in stoppage time with a German Denis strike. The Blucerchiati got themselves a consolation goal through captain Roberto Soriano moments before the full-time whistle.

Atalanta did most of the attacking in the opening minutes and took the lead after seven minutes when Boukary Drame’s low cross from the left was deflected into the net by Moisander. The ball looped over Samp goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano and went in off the far post.

Eder soon after had angled drive saved by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Sportiello but La Dea remained the more dangerous attacking threat. Alejandro Gomez and Alberto Grassi both missed chances to increase Atalanta’s lead. Eder fluffed a chance for the visitors from close range by putting the ball over the bar.

German Denis replaced Mauricio Pinilla after 32 minutes, who had sustained an injury earlier in the game. Sampdoria’s possession play was very slow and unimaginative and Jasmin Kurtic missed the chance to put Atalanta 2-0 up before half-time.

Edy Reja’s side maintained the attacking momentum early in the second half while Sampdoria lacked the guile to threaten the Orobici defence. Gabriel Paletta got a yellow card after 57 minutes after shoving Luis Muriel off the ball and Kurtic wasted another scoring opportunity by volleying high and wide.

Giulio Migliaccio came on and nearly made it 2-0 with a header but Soriano nearly equalised with a long-range strike. Walter Zenga’s became more attack-minded when Antonio Cassano replaced Luis Muriel after 70 minutes but struggled to put serious pressure on Sportiello.

Denis finally got Atalanta’s second in stoppage time after he ran onto Gomez’s through-ball and he slot the ball past Viviano. Soriano scored a consolation goal after he side-footed Edgar Barreto’s cross from the right side.

Atalanta are now levelĀ in sixth place with Roma and Chievo on 11 points while Sampdoria are a point behind.
