New Carpi defender Cristian Zaccardo says he’s looking forward to the challenge ahead with the Serie A newcomers after officially being unveiled at a news conference on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old former AC Milan central defender had struggled to establish himself in the Rossoneri starting eleven in the past couple of seasons, making just 14 appearances with the Stadio Guiseppe Meazza outfit, and is now excited about starting a new chapter in his career with the Biancorossi.

“I first had contacts with Carpi in late July, so I assessed my chances with Milan and I realized that I was out of their technical project,” Zaccardo told reporters at the press conference to announce his signing.

“Carpi called me a few times and they showed a real desire to sign me, and made me feel I will be an important player in their new project.

“I evaluated the offer and almost immediately we made an agreement, also with the help of Milan.

“I’m coming home as I live in Vicino.

“It will be difficult this season because there are strong teams and we will have to fight for survival.

“I put myself at the disposal of the coach and my teammates, and hope to show my qualities on the field and help everyone.

“We need to win our mini league to stay in this division, and beat the teams that are near our level, but we were happy with our performance against Inter, where only the result was wrong.

The former Parma defender is working hard to gain full fitness again after playing so few games over the past two seasons, but is happy with how things are going so far.

“I’ve been training with Milan lately to get my fitness levels up,” he added.

“I feel good now, my physical condition is pretty good.

“We work with great intensity in training, with fairly heavy workouts.

“I’m really looking forward to playing regularly again.”
