Poland legend and former Roma star Zbigniew Boniek is convinced that the Giallorossi will move to sign Wojciech Szczesny on a permanent deal.

Roma spent the summer trying to find a long-term replacement for the ageing Morgan De Sanctis and eventually landed the Arsenal goalkeeper on a season-long loan and Boniek feels that his former side will make Szczesny a permanent addition if he performs well.

“I am convinced that if all goes well, Roma will sign him [Szczesny],” Boniek told Centro Suono Sport.

“Arsenal have made a mistake in letting him go, he is much better than [Petr] Cech.

“He is very happy to be at Roma and is happy with the squad.

“I’m sorry that De Sanctis was a little bit offended by what I said a few weeks ago, when on hearing the news that my compatriot had joined Roma, I said that Szczesny was really strong.

“I never wanted to offend Morgan [De Sanctis], I have a lot of respect for him.

“I only wanted to say that a great goalkeeper had joined the club, a much younger player but one who is already an experienced international.”
