New Fiorentina midfielder Joan Verdu believes he has joined a winning side, following his move from Arabian Gulf League side Bani Yas.

The Spaniard spent one season in Abu Dhabi, in what many considered to be the twilight of his career, following successful spells in La Liga with Deportivo La Coruna, Espanyol and Real Betis.

“Fiorentina is a great opportunity. My career wasn’t finished, it just took a different path,” said Verdu at his introductory press conference at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

“There had been contact with the club in 2012 but nothing happened. Now I am here in a very strong team that wants to win.”

The former Barcelona youth product also addressed questions regarding Italian players.

“When I was young it wasn’t easy to see players from other leagues but I admire Andrea Pirlo since he is a fellow midfielder.

“Here at Fiorentina I am very lucky to play with Giuseppe Rossi. I faced him many times when he played for Villarreal and he was a very strong player in Spain.”

Finally, the creative midfielder explained his decision to wear the numberĀ 21 shirt.

“I was here at Coverciano four or five years ago with Espanyol when our team-mate, Daniel Jarque, died. I chose this number to honour him.”

Verdu will be hoping to make his debut for la Viola when they face Genoa on Sunday 13 September.
