Palermo 1-0 GenoaPalermo will host newcomers Carpi at Stadio Renzo Barbera on Sunday afternoon in the third round of Serie A.

Having been beaten by Sampdoria and Inter in their opening two games of Serie A, Carpi will aim to pick up their first points of the season during their trip to Sicily.

Palermo on the other have began the new season in bright fashion, taking all six points out of a possible six in the opening two rounds of fixtures, beating Genoa and Udinese at home and away respectively.

The departure of Paulo Dybala to Juventus in the summer hasn’t seemed to have affected Giuseppe Iachini’s side as much as feared before the season kick-off.

The Rosanero have also highlighted their defensive improvements from pre-season, with two back-to-back clean sheets in their opening matches.

However they have still shown slight teething problems offensively as shown when Palermo struggled to break Genoa’s backline in the opening fixture, but Abdelhamid El Kaoutari’s late strike gave the Sicilian side all three points, a week before Luca Rigoni’s early header helping the Rosanero to leave the Fruli with full points in the next game.

As for Carpi, they have looked determined despite a disappointing 5-2 defeat at Sampdoria on the opening day and a 2-1 defeat to Inter in the second game.

Italian striker Antonio Di Gaudio scored the deserved equaliser at Stadio Alberto Braglia in the second half to cancel out Stefan Jovetic’s opener, but once again Jovetic scored the last grasp winner for the Nerazzurri to hand Carpi an undeserved loss.

Midfielder Robin Quaison is expected to form a partnership with Franco Vazquez in Palermo’s attack, whereas Fiorentina loanee Ryder Matos and Kevin Lasanga are expected to lead Carpi’s attack once again. It has been expected much more from new signing Marco Borriello this season, who could be given his Carpi debut this weekend as a substitute.

As for their head-t0-head record, Palermo faced Carpi twice during their history (both in 2013-2014 Serie B season), and in both occasions Carpi emerged as winners.
