Roma Club Focus: Garcia buys himself some time

Rudi Garcia bought himself some time after Roma defeated Carpi 5-1, but the result could turn out to be a pyrrhic victory after key players sustained serious injuries ahead of the Giallorossi’s trip to Belarus to face BATE Borisov.

After the bitter disappointment of a home draw against Sassuolo and a devastating defeat away to Sampdoria, the Gods must have been smiling down on Roma’s under pressure coach Garcia when they handed his side a home match against Carpi on Saturday.

With all respect to the beleaguered Biancorossi, they served as the perfect side for Roma to record a convincing win and relieve the pressure on their under-fire boss.

Last week we referred to the damages of the Frenchman’s squad rotation and how it would only serve to increase pressure on the main players against Sampdoria. Unfortunately for the Lupi it proved to be the case after they fell to a 2-1 defeat against the Blucherchiati.

However, perhaps also fortuitously for Garcia, the sheer inconsistencies of many of his side’s rivals also presents itself as an opportunity for him to redeem himself in the eyes of thousands of sceptical and disillusioned supporters who are already clamouring for the return of former players such as Vincenzo Montella and Carlo Ancelotti to take charge of the Giallorossi immediately.

Losing to Sampdoria may have been a severe disappointment, but on the other hand Napoli dropped points at the Stadio Alberto Braglia to Carpi whilst even Juventus could only muster a point at home to minnows Frosinone.

Garcia may be able to claim that Roma are still very much in the title race and even still favourites to win the Scudetto, but for the former Lille coach his future will rest entirely on perception. The inconsistent form of Napoli and Juventus can only serve as an opportunity for so long before it becomes a danger: a danger which Garcia will pay the price with his job.

Soon people will begin to question the true state of Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus. All of a sudden Roma’s victory over the Bianconeri will diminish in stature as more teams prove that taking points from Juventus no longer requires the herculean effort of the last few years. Fingers will be pointed at Garcia as to why Roma aren’t winning the Scudetto in a season where their greatest challengers in Juventus have been severely weakened.

Roma fans will relish Juventus’ losses but how long before they realise that their greatest opportunity to win the Scudetto is finally upon them yet they may still not be in a position to grasp that chance?

The rout against Carpi is now consigned to the history books and the Lupi must prove they are capable of putting together a winning run of results despite injuries to the likes of Edin Dzeko, Francesco Totti and Seydou Keita.

Garcia has bought himself time, but it won’t be the poor form of Juventus that keeps him in a job, now it is all up to him.
