Former Fiorentina coach Giovanni Trapattoni has heaped praise on Paulo Sousa, claiming that Fiorentina will only get better under the ambitious coach.

La Viola enjoyed a successful pre-season after beating the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea in the International Champions Cup.

However, the club have enjoyed mixed results since the starts of the season with a comfortable win over AC Milan on the opening weekend before succumbing to 3-1 defeat to Torino in the second outing.

And the 76-year-old is also confident of a bright future for the club, but has warned that the honeymoon for the club’s youngsters are over and will need to mature in order to help the side become better.

“I know Sousa very well, he is a great coach. He has already shown that abroad,” he told Radio Bruno.

“Fiorentina is a brilliant team that plays good football. It ‘a team that has ambitions and I think Sousa can be assertive.

“All the youngsters are growing. The time of enthusiasm has passed and it is now the time for them to mature.”

In addition, Trapattoni believes that the tactical nature of the Italian game led to Mario Gomez’s downturn in form at the club.

“German football is very athletic and they use the spaces on the pitch,” he continued.

“Here, technique and especially tactics prevail and he found himself ‘imprisoned’ as a player. Gomez needs space and needs a certain type of supply from the midfielders.
