Vidal BayernBayern Munich honorary director Franz Beckenbauer has claimed that the €40 million purchase of Arturo Vidal from Juventus was a mistake.

The former German World Cup winner, who lifted the trophy as team captain in 1974 and later as manager in 1990, has again made his criticism of the Chilean midfielder clear after previously critcising the midfielder’s performance in the Bundesliga side’s Champions League win over Olympiakos in September.

“Bayern do not need Vidal,” Beckenbauer told Sky Sports in Germany.

“He is not fit, has played poorly, and should not take the field if he is not 100 per cent.”

“I told [Mario] Gotze not to follow his example.”

Vidal joined the German champions during the summer transfer window for €40 million and was previously defended by coach Pep Guardiola in wake of the comments Beckenbauer made of his performance against Olympiakos in September.
