Carpi secured their first Serie A victory in their history with a 2-1 win over Torino at the Stadio Alberto Braglia on Saturday afternoon.

A fortuitous own-goal from keeper Daniele Padelli gave the hosts the lead, with Ryder Matos adding to their winning margin. Maxi Lopez reduced the deficit to one goal, but il Toro couldn’t find a leveler before the final whistle.

Despite some early pressure from the home side, Torino grew into the first half. Gaston Silva had the first shot on target, but Vlad Belec saved it comfortably enough. Maxi Lopez had a chance in front of goal, but his shot on the turn crept just wide of the far post.

In the second half, the hosts threw off the defensive shackles and opened the scoring. Gabriel Silva drifting into space outside the area and let fly with a shot, which bounced off the post and cannoned in off goalkeeper Daniele Padelli. Torino looked to respond, substitute Afriyie Acquah coming close from range, but his shot bounced wide.

The hosts added to their lead through Ryder Matos. A brilliant cross from Marco Borriello was met at full speed by the Brazilian, who headed it past Padelli to further the keeper’s misery. However, a penalty was awarded moments later when Igor Bugnjic brought down Maxi Lopez. The Argentinian converted the spot kick to keep the pressure on the Biancorossi, but it wasn’t enough and Carpi held on for a historic victory.

Carpi move off the bottom of the table with five points, while Torino lose ground on the pack at the top of Serie A; this just their second defeat of the season. The change of coach from Fabrizio Castori to Giuseppe Sannino having an immediate effect for Carpi, but survival in Serie A still an almighty task.
