Chievo and Hellas Verona played out a 1-1 draw in the Derby della Scala on Saturday night at the Stadio Bentegodi in Serie A, meaning Verona are still winless this season.

Perparim Hetemaj hit the post for the Flying Donkeys before a controversial Eros Pisano goal gave Verona the lead from an offside position, before Lucas Castro brought Cheivo back on terms late on.

Nicola Rigoni’s speculative effort nearly opened the scoring just before 20 minutes were on the clock when his effort took Rafael by surprise in the Verona goal, but the 33-year-old just about made a good save to tip it over the bar.

It was a tight affair and neither side could break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes.

Jacopo Sala nearly put Verona ahead just before 10 minutes passed in the second half but his attempt to convert a cross were not accurate enough as he slid past the post while the ball flew over his head.

A goal nearly came at the other end as the energy levels began to rise with Hetemaj’s cross struck the post before a Verona counterattack led to a corner.

The first goal finally came through a Federico Viviani free kick when he floated the ball into the penalty area which was well turned into the net by Pisano to give his side the lead, although the 28-year-old was clearly offside when watched again.

With seven minutes to go, a Lucas Castro header equalised for the Flying Donkeys from a well-placed Massimo Gobbi cross, and Verona couldn’t respond.

Chievo now sit fourth in the Serie A table, while the Verona’s early relegation fears worsen as they are 17th, equal on points with two teams below them who both have a game in hand.
