Italy U-21 coach Gigi Di Biagio says the decision of AC Milan midfielder Jose Mauri to snub an Italy call-up in order to wait for Argentina must be respected.
The 19-year-old joined Milan after the bankruptcy of former club Parma and was recently called up to represent Italy’s U-20 team but turned down the chance in order to wait for a call-up from his native Argentina.
“Jose Mauri is a good guy and a great player,” said Di Biagio in La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“By choosing not to accept the Under-20 call, he has made a decision that is to be respected.
“He had been sent to the U-20 team so he could play a little, seeing as he never plays for Milan.
“Obviously if he feels Argentinean today then he won’t feel Italian in a month, so I don’t think we’ll try to call him up any time soon.”
